Summer Kaftans by AIISHA

Its summer time following Ramadan and Eid. My Studio 8 clients know how crazy I can get with my colored kaftans. This season, we introduced a vast range of colors with emphasis on a classic kaftan with very elegant and subtle beading. This one came in a variaty of tones, from my favorite neon watermelon and white, to nude, turquoise, forest green, orange and a very chic red one.

I had the chance to have a photoshoot the collection with www.AnaZahra.com a platform where I occasionally blog in Arabic. I personally modeled the collection, a designer in the model’s shoes.

We have also introduced a wrap Kaftan which I especially think is extremely elegant and makes me think of a very stylish Abaya. I’ve kept our signature simplicity with bold colors as well as a few pieces in a printed silk with brown base. Although I’m not usually a fan of the color brown in fashion, this one in particular has the material feeling like a fresh breeze.

Its a very practical collection, relatively conservative, and quite affordable. Kaftans – or at least my Kaftan designs – are one of few pieces that can suit ANY body type. Trust me when I say, its a confidence booster!

Check it out in Studio 8 on Jumeirah Beach Road opposite Mercatto Dubai.

Thank you www.AnaZahra.com and thanks to the One & Only Royal Mirage – Jetty Lounge for such a lovely setting!

The Making of our 3D Virtual Fashion Show

Its funny how months and months of preparations are summarized into a few minute fashion show. Anticipation, press pages, people asking for invitations left and right, all for a few minutes. Usually our fashion shows vary between 20 – 60 minutes. Our 3D Virtual Fashion show with Ariel hosted by Celebrity Stylist June Ambrose on the 30th of June in Dubai was a 4-minutes fashion show. In these 4 minutes, we showcased a capsule of 15 pieces from the entire collection that will be showcased in October this year.

4 minutes were the conclusion of several months of making the dresses displayed and about 2 months day and night preparing the 3D fashion show. Preparations involved selecting the models, deciding on the different hair and makeup styles to make the models versatile, dresses that would work, music, animation ideas, filming, editing and so on.

In terms of dresses, we weren’t able to use any transparent dresses – which was a big problem , shiny dresses such as satin or heavy crystallized surfaces, feathers, or any green pieces since the shooting took place in a studio fully painted in green.

The hair and makeup had drastic changes in between each 2 outfits which ended up with 6 – 9 different looks for the 3 models used. We went for defined eyeliner (my personal favorite) and bold lips, Red – Fuchsia – Red/Orange. I was so lucky to work with one of my favorite makeup artists Samira Olfat and one of the most talented hair stylists Massimiliano Luca Comella

Every change in the video, took a 24-hour rendering. We had 3 animations created: Model blowing a kiss that spread into powder – Model throwing an actual flower and then its petals spread and felt like they were coming onto the audience watching – Model winking, which circulates into bigger winks. In the final cut, models walked out as if on a stage that was virtually built. The process took a lot of hard work from AIR, who came up with a beautiful result that was later set to be the first ever Virtual 3D Fashion Show in the Middle East and to my knowledge in the world!

I can’t stress enough on how special this collection is to me. From this collaboration’s perspective, the photos I chose to display show the powder tones used, the texture and the powerful yet simple cuts. From a personal level, this collection has been nourished with a lot of love and passion over the past few months. I can’t wait to show you the whole series in October. You will see AIISHA’s soul in each and every piece and I hope you’ll love it the way I do.

Paris Fashion Week 2011 – Georges Chakra

The first womens Couture fashion show I ever watched during the Paris Fashion Week 2011 was for Georges Chakra at the Palais de Tokyo. Its worth mentioning that just before the show started I had a chance to view a very exclusive and one-on-one presentation for the latest Chanel  J12 Chromatic watch. All in all, it was sensational. Very black and white.

I had to wrap up quickly and go to the backstage of Georges Chakra fashion show. I was fascinated by the generosity that Chakra loads in his creations. I have to say that it was my favorite show during the entire Paris Fashion Week. There’s so much regal and fresh feel to it all in one.

His inspiration was like most of the Lebanese designers, nature and flowers. That brought to my attention how the European designers were mostly inspired by certain characters. My favorite pieces involved a short fully CRYSTALLIZED by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS dress and an coral/orange dress with a fully beaded tulle tight pants. Marvelous pieces. Yes, fully bling bling but in the most elegant way.

There was a tiny incident I enjoyed, that was when Mr. George Chakra was gonna have an interview with a TV station and he asked me to hold his telephone till he’s done. About 15 minutes later, his phone was ringing, and thats when I noticed that he’s forgotten his mobile with me!

On a separate note, a lot of people ask why are George Chakra’s creations so expensive. If you meet him and his staff, you’d be embraced with class and elegance. That alone makes you fall in love with the people behind the brand. But of course comes his beautiful designs, generosity in materials and crystals and a very fine end product. People, art is invaluable!

Paris Fashion Week 2011 – John Galliano (Homme)

My third show to attend at the Paris Fashion Week 2011 end of January was for John Galliano Homme, which took place at the Ecole de Medicine. I had a first row seat and I enjoyed every bit of the show. Or should I say of the theatrical act I saw? It was insane. The music, the decoration, the model’s presentations.. all of it was simply great!

Galliano’s collection was inspired by the Russian ballerinus Rudolf Nureyev who was a Tartar where the clothes reflected the Barbaric lifestyle. With a Russian pianist playing live, the models showcased big coats, military jackets as well as tightly tailored pantsuits. The makeup and setting reflected how Galliano saw Rudie in his eyes.

I constantly bumped into River Viiper, who’s real fun and nice and Joan Pedrola, quite serious. Both are very young.

Here are some photos from my experience

Below is a glimpse on what the collection looked like.

Then there was this extremely VIP room for very selected people and press to enter it and meet the designer, John Galliano. I was very surprised with how thin he is in real life. Check out his hat
